about

Ben Walker (Little Fish), Spencer Walker (A Silent Film) and Nick Gill (The Monroe Transfer, Fireworks Night) had three days to write and record an album. Dogs Running Free has everything from catchy powerpop to massive prog Hammond wig-outs, and occasionally a musical saw.

Spencer Walker: Drums, voice

“I don't have a hash tag, nor a blog, but this is ruddy excellent.”
– Tim Myatt, Tibetologist

“This album is the reason HMV doesn't have a divider for Powerpop-Prog-Folk-Comedy-Crossover.”
– Christian Payne, Cyber-journalist

There's a website with more comedy reviews, all the videos from the recording session and loads more fun stuff: dogsrunningfree.tumblr.com

Track Name: Dogs Running Free
And there you were
Hanging off the back of the train
Threw your bag and followed it down
Rolling and tripping and laughing and screaming
Into my arms

And there we were
Frozen in the railway lights
Fields of flowers and tangled grass
Hiding and kissing and dreaming and running
Into the night

Like dogs running free
Like dogs running free
Like dogs running free
Like dogs running free

And there you are
Hiding in the back of my mind
Rolling fields and railway lights
Living and breathing and fading to nothing
Never again

Track Name: Exploder
EXPLODER!!!
Track Name: Melp!
Melp! I need somebody
Melp! Not just anybody
Melp! You know I need someone
Me-e-elp!
Track Name: Happy
Forget about the worries
The problems dragging you down
Don't listen to the voices
The naysayers who build their defensive fortress of a life on negativity
Believe what you want to believe
Believe in me

Cos this song will make you happy
This song will make you young
This song will make you beautiful
This song will make you fun
If you're looking for a girl
This song will help you get her
Cos it's scientifically proven
This song will make you better (better) better (better) better (better) better (better)

Ignore the intellectuals
They'll tell you things aren't true
You can prove anything with numbers
But numbers can't make life or hold your hand while you're afraid of your mortality
You think therefore you are
A superstar

Cos this song will make you happy
This song will make you young
This song will make you beautiful
This song will make you fun
If you're looking for a girl
This song will help you get her
Cos it's scientifically proven
This song will make you better (better) better (better) better (better) better (better)

[spoken]
Ladies and gentlemen, I look around me today and I see a number of people. I see sad faces. Sad, grey, lonely faces with sad, pathetic eyes and tiny, wrinkled noses and disgusting ??. But look around you, people. Look at that girl over there. Look at that man next to you. Feel the love between you. They are people like you who cherish the beautiful things in the world. They want love, they want kittens, cupboards with curtains in and jackets and shoes and trainers that they can wear on crisp Autumn days as they wander through the streets kicking leaves up into the air. They want love as well. Look around you, everyone. The world is full of beauty, majesty, rainbows, kittens, unicorns, Scrabble, all sorts of beautiful words!

This song (look at her hair again)
This song (touch her on the knee)
This song (kiss her face)
This song (life is beautiful)

You are a special person
You matter to the world
You are an individual
And you can get the girl
Your money problem's over
She's torn up the divorce
Your bad knee feels much better
And all the world is yours (yours) yours (yours) yours (yours) yours (yours)
Track Name: Sorted
He thinks he's got it sorted
And no-one's going to notice
That underneath the outfit
He's lost and insecure
The fashionista haircut
Makes him look much younger
In the endless Facebook story
Of his Hipstamatic life

He thinks he's found his people
The ones who understand him
Like loafer-wearing boy scouts
With a uniform of cool
The conversation's never
Emotionally engaging
But deep inside he knows they understand
Where he comes from

If only they knew
He grew up in a village in Wiltshire
His dad buys his socks
And he's only ever kissed his mum

His flatmate's name is Spider
But really he's called Derek
He works in multimedia
And deals a bit of weed
All their friends will be there
For Spider's installation
It's a private viewing
Because no-one wants to come

If only they knew
The whole thing's accidental
It's not really art
He was only trying to move some boxes
If only they knew

He's staring at his iPhone
Wondering how to use it
Listening to the waiter
Talk about his screenplay
He's supposed to be creative
He bought himself a Moleskine
He doesn't want to write in it
In case he gets it wrong

If only they knew
He sleeps in a Hypercolour t-shirt
He doesn't like Foals
And he doesn't mind working with spreadsheets
He finds his jeans constricting
Regrets his one tattoo
He finds it quite exhausting
Making statements with his shoes
If only they knew
Track Name: The Incident
Standing silent, strangely still
Placed here alone
Glancing up they catch my eye
All these things I've known
Falling through the air

They crash beside me to the ground
Falling all the time
Piling up around my feet
I begin to climb
Falling through the air
Falling through the air

Do I believe these things I see
Old memories come back to me
All I can do is jump

Standing silent, strangely still
Placed here alone
Glancing up they catch my eye
All these things I've known
Falling through the air
